I Still Haven't Gotten My Stimulus Check
I Still Haven't Gotten My Stimulus Check. Payment for those who receive ssi. If you have signed on with a new bank or moved since your last filed tax.
When politicians employ the term "stimulus" they usually mean government spending. For an economist, the term "stimulus" may be in part spending but not all of it is "stimulus."
What is the reason that not all spending is considered to be the correct type of "stimulus?" We look at "stimulus" by looking at its effect, such as the amount of multiplier effect (additional dollars generated by the initial spending) and the velocity impact (the rate at which the dollars move through the economy) and whether the effect is immediate. Also, we consider whether the spending is coming from existing government revenue or from borrowed dollars as there are different ancillary effects.
Also, not all "stimulus" is government spending; "stimulus" can be in the opposite direction, tax cuts. Tax cuts, just like spending are the result of government revenues. Through denying tax revenue, when tax cuts are made the government encourages private sector spending, which under the right conditions could produce a profound immediate impact, and massive multiplier and velocity impacts.
The differences in spending and their impact on stimuli are vital. What is a straightforward example of spending that is immediate but has little potential for a multiplier or turn around effect? Assume you normally drink five glasses of water per day.
As a "stimulus" the government paid you to drink an additional or 6 glasses of water each day. It has the immediate effect of increasing water production and consumption. When the glass water has been consumed, there has been no increase in consumption. The only thing that was purchased by the government was one glass of water that was more than normal. And to get the next glass of drink, they must reimburse you another time. If the government ceases to pay this, the extra drinking ceases. Since it isn't promoting continuous drinking by you or others, there is an insignificant multiplier effect.
